A S. California Indian steatite heating stone with hole for handling. The stone would have been quarried off shore, and brought onto the mainland for working. Unusual about this piece is that the bottom side shows a groove characteristic of arrow straighteners, used to straighten heated shafts. So this would have had a dual use, and been easily carried with its hole, useful also for suspension. From an old California collection. Ex-Anthropos Fine Arts.
