New Guinea Mast Support

$ 1,200.00

#160020

Murik Lakes, New Guinea, mast support for an open sailing boat. Heavy piece with archaic feel. Clearly old and exposed over many years to sea and elements. Another great example of a piece with a utilitarian use manifesting a dedication to aesthetic in a essential object. Reminds us of the effort western shipbuilders put into their mast figures! Collected by Paulian Missionary Society in 1960's. Weathered patina consistent with long use and exposure. Areas of loss and splitting. Stable and strong. Circa late 19th century.
