Hand Forged Congo Currency: A forged iron gong dating to the 19th century. It features an extended forged iron handle in the shape of a stylized snake or bird head with two hot forged rivets. The gong was formed in two pars with one edge folded over the other. Before it was employed as currency it was used in ritual of restricted mens' societies. Nice, resonating sound when struck. Circa: 19th century or before.
