New Guinea Lumi Bowl

Lumi wooden bowl, inland of Sissano, West Sepik Province, New Guinea. Fantastic, undulating, archaic shape with unique pitcher feature and overall boat like contours. This is a remote region not known for its arts. Like most of the bowls for the region, this bowl is pre-contact, carved with non-metal tools. This bowl would likely have been used as mortar for pounding taro and sweet potato. Some nails hammered inside of the bowl at a later date as apparent native repair. Extremely Rare. Ex Michael Hamson.
