Old Kuba Beaded Chief’s Chair

$ 2,500.00

A Kuba throne chair with embroidered textile, cowrie shells, trade beads, and raffia cloth from the Congo. Use of bead patterning and colors induces the effect of "op art". The throne of a chief or important personage, that would have traveled with him as he went from one village to another. A prestige object of the first order. Considerable wear and some fraying to indigenous cloth at edges-but this sort of wear would have been of little import within the culture-only serving to remind of the important events where it had been used and treasured. Early to mid 20th century.
