Rapa, sometimes called Rapa Iti Little Rapa, to distinguish it from "Rapa Nui" (Big Rapa) aka Easter Island), is the largest of the remote Bass Island chain settled by Polynesians in the 13th Century. This stone Goddess,is reminiscent in its bold treatment, of Easter Island sculpture. This work also shares uncanny similarities with the "Venus of Willendorf", Austria, circa 30,000 B.C. Collected by Joseph Louis Marcillac (1870-1943) in 1917 near the village of Area.
