Very Old Senufo 4 Legged Stool

A very old and large Senufo stool, Ivory Coast, W. Africa. The form of this stool is characteristic, and of a type that is made to the present day. What makes this stool exceptional is its extraordinary wear and evidence of very long use within the culture. The legs are scruffed and worn. The seat is glossy from generations of appreciation. Strong and entirely stable. These stools, like family heirlooms in western cultures, become more treasured in Africa as they age and acquire memories of the ancestors who have used them. The present stool is as old as any of its type that we have seen. Obtained in the early 1990's from a trader with exceptional contacts. Certainly 19th century or before. Rare in this condition and age.
